Practice areas

Liesa’s practice is focused on the legal aspects of innovation and data.

She is specialised in intellectual property law, technology law and data protection law.

Her experience in intellectual property law encompasses a wide range of IP matters and related commercial matters, including copyright, trademarks, designs, trade secrets, tradenames, and domain names as well as e-commerce, distribution agreements, unfair market practices, comparative advertising, social media marketing and the organisation of contests.

In these areas, Liesa not only assists clients with advisory work, but also drafts and negotiates agreements (e.g. terms and conditions, franchising, licensing). Liesa moreover is an experienced IP litigator (e.g. counterfeiting seizure, injunction and damages proceedings).

Liesa’s expertise in technology law covers IT contracts (such as SLAs, software development and licensing and outsourcing contract) and questions relating to cloud computing (SaaS, IaaS, PaaS), big data, artificial intelligence and cybersecurity. Digital laws such as the Data Act, Data Governance Act, AI Act, Digital Markets and Digital Services Act and Cyber Resilience Act are part of her core focus areas. In addition, she also regularly litigates regarding IT and software projects. 

Liesa also has a robust background in data protection law, offering specialised advice on effective data protection compliance for innovative projects and technologies. In this respect she has managed GDPR audits and compliance trajectories, advised on direct marketing and profiling, data transfer strategies, as well as impact assessments and data breach handling. Liesa also represents clients in data protection litigation before the Belgian Data Protection Authority.  

Liesa works for both domestic and international clients across a wide variety of sectors, including the energy, automotive, e-mobility, health, manufacturing, digital and retail sector.

Professional admissions 

Liesa has been a member of the Dutch-Speaking Bar Association of the Brussels Bar since September 2018.

Academic activities and memberships

Liesa is a teaching assistant at the Centre of IT & IP Law of the University of Leuven. In this role, she supports teaching activities for students enrolled in the Master’s programs in Law and IP & IT Law. 

She also is an active speaker in the fields of intellectual property law, technology law and data protection law and publishes frequently on these topics. Liesa is one of the regular authors of the current affairs feature of the Belgian journal “Privacy en Informatie (P&I)”.
