Practice areas

Wout Platteau is specialized in data law. He advises clients on compliance with EU and Belgian data protection law (GDPR). He represents them in data protection litigation. He also advises them about their rights and obligations regarding the fair access to and use of data, such under the EU Data Act and Data Governance Act. 

He is also an expert in technology law, such as software, e-commerce, digital services (e.g. the EU Digital Services Act), cybersecurity (NIS), and artificial intelligence. He drafts various types of IT contracts, such as regarding the development, implementation and licensing of software, apps, technology and cloud services.

Wout is also specialised in intellectual property law (copyright, trademarks, designs, patents, databases and domain names), trade secrets and unfair competition.

He further advises clients on general business and consumer law and drafts various types of commercial contracts.

In addition, he is involved in research and innovation projects funded by the European Commission within the areas of data protection, technology and intellectual property, thereby helping the project partners to bring their research to market. His role involves assisting with compliance with both legal and ethical requirements.

Professional admissions 

Wout has been a member of the Dutch-speaking Bar Association at the Brussels Bar since October 2024.

Prior professional experience

In 2022, Wout did a Data Protection Officer internship at Umicore in Brussels. 

In 2024, he did a Program Officer internship at the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) in Washington D.C., where he conducted research on the intersection of environmental law, technological developments and national security concerns.
