Unleashing the Potential of Sustainable Digital Ecosystems: TrustChain Open Call 5

Since January 2023, Timelex has been contributing to the TrustChain project, an ambitious EU-funded initiative that aims to build a secure, sustainable and human-centric internet by developing advanced Next Generation Internet protocols and decentralised software solutions. The project addresses critical challenges, such as trustworthy digital identities, secure and resilient data pathways, energy-efficient data sharing, and the creation of a new data governance model in line with European values and regulations.

Top Internet innovators are selected for funding and support through 5 open calls. Each of these calls support the development of cutting-edge solutions to break down data silos, ensure interoperability and explore privacy-preserving Web3 and blockchain technologies. By tackling these issues, the project empowers individuals and organisations to better govern their data and participate in trusted digital ecosystems.

The topics of the previous open calls were the following:

1. Decentralised digital identity
2. User privacy and data governance
3. Economics and democracy 
4. Multi-chain support for Next Generation Internet (NGI) protocols

The fifth and final open call focuses on an essential topic: Green, scalable, and sustainable DLTs. 

As digital ecosystems expand, the environmental impact of blockchain and other DLTs has come under scrutiny. The high energy consumption associated with these technologies poses a significant challenge to sustainability. Open Call 5 aims to address this by promoting the development of solutions that are not only energy-efficient but also scalable and adaptable to diverse use cases.

The main objectives of Open Call 5 are:

• Reducing the environmental footprint of DLT operations.
• Improving scalability to support a growing number of transactions and users.
• Promoting decentralised and interoperable approaches to eliminate data silos.
• Ensuring that technological innovations are in line with European values of privacy, security, and sustainability.
   

The fifth open call provides funding and support for innovators, researchers and organisations to develop cutting-edge solutions addressing these goals. Selected participants will gain access to:

• Financial support: Competitive funding to develop and implement their projects.
